Ginger Powder and Jaggery Health Tonic for Coughs and Colds – Ginger Recipes

 

This ginger and jaggery health tonic does wonders for me when I feel a cough or cold coming on. It is a very simple health tonic that barely takes 2 minutes to make.

There’s something about this ginger powder and jaggery combination that really helps with colds/cough. It definitely helps me and it might be worth trying for you as well to see if it works for you.

 

Ginger has been used for centuries in India to help fight coughs and colds. Ginger powder can be used in various forms, e.g. it can also be used in turmeric milk to help with a cough, but for some reason that doesn’t work as well as this combination of ginger powder and jaggery – atleast for me.

Jaggery is made from sugarcane and it is less refined / processed than sugar. It is still sugar but it healthier in the sense that it has more iron. You can find jaggery in any Indian supermarket. It may be a brown / white colour and is quite solid. It takes some effort to scoop it out of the tin.

The trick is to drink this ginger and jaggery health tonic just when you feel the onset of the cold. When I have this combination 2 or 3 days in a row right at the start of the cough/cold cycle, my cough or cold sometimes vanishes. You can drink this health tonic 1 – 2 times a day or even 3 times a day.

If you are already in the middle of a cold / cough, this health tonic may not get rid of your cold or cough instantly but it will definitely help fight the infection.

 

Please note that it may or it may not work for you. I’m simply sharing this recipe as it works for me and perhaps if it works for you too, then I’ll feel good about having helped someone 🙂

 

I have done some research on this and it turns out that ginger has a compound called gingerol which is a strong antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties too. It is very likely that this compound is what helps fight the cough or cold.

INGREDIENTS:

 

To make 1 cup of ginger and jaggery health tonic

 

1/2 tsp ginger powder

1 tbsp jaggery

1 cup hot water

METHOD:

 

Add 1/2 tsp of ginger powder to your cup.

Add 1 tbsp of jaggery to the cup.

Boil water in your kettle and pour into the cup.

Mix until all the ingredients have combined. The jaggery will melt into the hot water.

Drink while it is still relatively hot. This ginger powder and jaggery health tonic cools down pretty fast so don’t leave it aside to cool for too long.
