Nutella Style Hot Chocolate With Ashwagandha Powder – Ashwagandha Recipes – Healthy Drinks Recipes

Today, I craved a cup of hot chocolate – I had to indulge – we all experience those days.

To make myself feel a little better, I decided to add Ashwagandha powder to my hot chocolate.

In India, ashwagandha powder has been used in Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) to treat insomnia, revitalise health and increase sexual drive (not that I need it for this but I could do with better sleep).

Some studies have been done in modern science and there are some benefits as well as some adverse side effects.

The benefits of consuming Ashwagandha powder (according to Webmd and healthline.com) supported by scientific research are as below:

  • Ashwagandha powder may improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia
  • Ashwagandha powder may relieve stress, anxiety and depression
  • Ashwagandha powder may enhance physical strength
  • Ashwagandha powder may increase testosterone and fertility in men, however, more research is needed
  • Ashwagandha powder may improve cognitive function including memory and reaction time, however, more research is needed

Ashwagandha has a very bitter taste and doesn’t smell very nice if I’m honest. Hence, it’s good to find ways to incorporate ashwagandha powder in recipes such that you can’t taste or smell it.

And what better way to do this than an indulgent nutella style hot chocolate.

To get that nutella flavour, I simply used hazelnut milk and raw cacao powder. If you have nutella, you can also use this instead.

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp raw cacao powder

1 tbsp hot water to melt the cacao

1 cup hazelnut milk (if you would like to make it creamier, use 1/2 cup hazelnut milk and 1/2 cup full fat milk)

1 tbsp honey or any other sweetener

1/2 tsp ashwagandha powder

For Garnishing:

Dark chocolate shavings

Whipped Cream

Vegan Marshmallows

METHOD:

Add the cacao powder to a pan.

Boil hot water – we only need about 1 tbsp.

To your pan, add the hot water and stir in the raw cacao. Get rid of any lumps and make sure the raw cacao is mixed in well.

Now, switch on the flame to a medium flame, add your milk of choice and the ashwagandha powder.

Add the honey or any other sweetener.

Stir to mix everything and keep stirring the nutella style hot chocolate with ashwagandha.

You do not want to boil the hot chocolate.

As soon as you see the ashwagandha hot chocolate becoming frothy on top (small bubbles forming – it becomes a white haze), stay alert!

You need to switch off the flame just before the hot chocolate starts boiling. I repeat, we do not want the hot chocolate to boil.

Take off the flame, pour into your cup and garnish with dark chocolate shavings / whipped cream or vegan marshmallows.
